On Tuesday of last week, Urbit announced that they would be launching their own EVM blockchain, with an airdrop to kickstart the ecosystem. The chain will be a proof of stake chain, following the lead of every emerging chain that has launched along with Ethereum.
The Urbit team is creating their own EVM client based on their own coding language Hoon. They plan to have zkEVM support, a capability that many other teams in the space such as Polygon and zksync are working towards. The whitepaper that was released with the announcement outlined uses and distribution of the native token $U, 80% of which will be airdropped to community members and Urbit ship owners and a select amount of Ethereum addresses. Anyone can create their own Urbit ship by heading to https://urbit.org/getting-started and following the steps if they wish to become a validator on the upcoming Urbit network.
